Beddow Tree helps Hastings High school with green careers day

Beddow Tree are pleased that we were able to work with Hastings High School (Burbage, Leicestershire) helping them with their green careers day.

The event ‘what’s my job?’ was an activity session attended by Mike Beddow, starting with students trying to guess our industry/job. We prepared a short presentation and then students had the opportunity to ask up to 20 questions with the aim of guessing the role/industry.

We then used this an an opportunity to talk about our industry, making the session informative and at the same time raising awareness of being a tree surgeon. We also saw this an an opportunity to attract new people into the industry in later years.

Many thanks to Hastings High School for letting Beddow Tree be part of their Green Careers Day.

Letter of Thanks received from Hastings High School

13/03/2024

Dear Mike,

On behalf of Hasting High School, I would like to express our sincere thanks to you for the time you have given us yesterday to deliver ‘What’s my job?’  to our year 9 students.  Your commitment, passion and enthusiasm for your careers has had a significant impact on our students.

Your contribution today forms part of our wider careers strategy, through which we are aiming to ensure that our students move on from Hastings High School as successful and confident young adults.  You have helped us boost our events around STEM, British Science Week and our environmental interest.

We know that the students found the event inspiring and we intend to get some feedback from the students – I will share any specific feedback or questions I receive about your career.  If you have any feedback you wish to share with us, it will help us to shape our future events.

CPD TRAINING FOR MIKE BEDDOW- Morphophysiology – understanding tree behaviour

As part of his continuing professional development Mike Beddow will be attending the ‘Morphophysiology – understanding tree behaviour’  event on 8th June 2023 by Arb Association. This will ensure Beddow Tree are able to keep abreast of the latest information within the Arboricultural Industry.

Morphophysiology  is based on the principles of tree architecture, and inspired by both Frances Hallé and Pierre Raimbault, morphophysiology provides a unique and innovative understanding of the complete life cycle of trees and is one of the most important recent contributions to our view of arboriculture, from nursery practice and formative pruning right through to veteran and ancient tree management.

Our first electric chainsaw Stihl MSA 220TC has gone into use

As part of our continued mission to minimise our carbon impact we have now started using Electric Chainsaws.

We will analyse the performance to determine battery requirements to ensure efficient purchase of batteries.  Hopefully, at some point during 2023 our electric equipment will be charged by our own solar array too!

Stihl HLA86 Long Reach Electric Telescopic Hedgecutter

Our first electric power tool for hedge cutting was purchased during October.

It is a telescopic version that gives us greater flexibility.  We also ordered a rear handle separately to offer the body some protection.

The benefits we are finding:

  1. Longer than expected battery life
  2. Less wearing parts as the motor is directly to the blades
  3. Less noise
  4. Lower running costs
  5. Lower vibration to the user
  6. Less fatigue during use
  7. Cleaner to transport

We coupled the Stihl HLA86 with a pair of Stihl AP 500 S batteries and have found 2x to be adequate for heavy use for a working day.
