Stump Grinding Tree Stump Removal Leicestershire- After your tree surgery has been completed whether its within Leicester, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Warwickshire, Northamptonshire, or Rutand, you may be looking to have your tree stumps removed!
There are 3 ways you can remove a stump:
1. Dig it out either by hand using an Axe, Root Axe (Mattock) and spade or with a digger or some description.
Problems are it can take ages and then you are left with a stump complete with soil that is not only heavy but also costly to dispose of. Burning very rarely works for stumps due to their moisture content and amount of soil trapped between the roots. When pulling on stumps if the roots are wrapped around services then they can be broken during the removal process.
2. Winch out the stumps.
This method can only be used on smaller stumps and you will need a very high capacity winch to undertake the works. It is essential to use a static wire rope that does not result in the bungee effect and flying stumps! You will also be left with soil and stumps to dispose of. Again nearby services such as Gas and Water could be damaged.
3. Grind them out with a Tree Stump Grinder.
Its a machine designed for the job! Stump grinders remove the main stump and butress roots down to 45cm below ground level (usually total removal).
Here at Beddow’s we have a variety of Stump grinders, high capacity winches and plenty of Axes and Mattocks (supplied with fit tree surgeons)! So whatever your problem we can usually find a solution.
The middle size stump grinder we operate requires an access of 29″ (74cm) although fences can be removed or replaced or the machine passed over the top if required. This machine has variable width tracks so that it can squeeze through smaller gaps and then when through the gap the tracks spread creating greater stability. As the machine uses tracks we also carry ground protection to prevent damage to lawns etc. The machine does way over 1 ton but compression is reduced due to the weight being spread over a greater area due to the tracks.
When pricing up work for the machines it is either done on a stump by stump basis or if a full day is required we can hire our stump grinders out with an operator. Unfortunately hiring of machines is not available without an operator. This is due to the cost of machines and that they are not suitable to be operated safely by the untrained. If you were to hire an equivelant machine yourself the costs would be comparable to us hiring you one with an operator and our staff will get more done in a day! If you are interested in Hiring us we can offer either of our larger stump grinding machines. Regular clients that utilise the hire services sometimes with a chainsaw operator as well include; golf courses, stately homes, woodlands and builders.
We currently have 3 different types of stump grinder:
27″ – 68.6cm access required – known as our small grinder
29″ – 74cm access required – our medium grinder
36″ – 91.5cm access required – our larger machine
Tree Stump Grinding / removal works by cutting the stump into small slithers of shredded wood that is mixed in with the soil around the stump. The main body of the stump is removed and not the entire radiating roots. However, when a tree has shallow roots which are prominant at the surface we can remove all or these.
After the tree stump has been removed replanting or returfing may be required.
If replanting the grindings (arisings following stump grinding) should be removed and replaced due to creating a nitrogen deficiency during the first year following tree stump grinding. Please ask our Arboricultural Advisors for more advice or to supply a quote to supply and plant a tree or shrub if considering this following stump removal.
When returfing over a previously removed stump then removal of the grindings is required again. This is due to the stump grindings reducing in mass as they rott down in the soil, this in turn creates a dent in the lawn. Backfilling of the hole is a careful balance of creating enough soil density to prevent / minimise settlement but not too much as to create compaction and reduce future grass development.
When asking for stump removal quotations from other tree surgery companies make sure the contractor specifies the depth that the machine will remove the stump down to. We frequently come across old stumps that are left only a few inches below ground level. Also check that a cable detection tool is used to ensure your power supply, telephone and cable TV remain intact.
We undertake a lot our work over the Leicester, Leicestershire area however if you have a sizeable job we are able to offer highly competitive rates if you are in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Warwickshire, Northamptonshire, or Rutand.
